The heart, chosen by will and affinity.
*fire - Tempest Rocette - The Tempest Rocettes are a race of avian creatures who dwell on storm-ravaged cliffs, from whose eyes flash lightning and from whose wings beat thunder. With a wingspan of 30-40 feet, they are the diminutive cousins to the Roc, but still a powerful otherkin who rule fields of battle with vim and vigor, scattering their enemies, and those of the Convocation, before them. Locally, they inhabit the Olympic and Cascade Ranges. In winter they converge on Mounts Rainier, Baker, and Adams to perform a ceremonial dance which maintains the peace of these great Volcanoes. In that season we ascend these treacherous peaks, gathering the small downy feathers of their underbelly, which bestow strength and ferocity.
*fire - Immortelle - In the depths of the Salish Sea dwells the daughter of Nefertem, granddaughter of Sekhmet, a creature gifted with immortality (or so we assume), yet cursed with the ravages of time upon her body which can only be put off or reversed by draining the essence of those around her. Attending her are the Calidum Sanguineum, a hemophilic race created by Sekhmet, whose pale-white, sparkling skin, and golden strands of hair mark them distinctly from any around them. Their flesh is akin to burning coals, and their blood hisses on the ground igniting flash fires which, due to the intense heat often become conflagrations within moments, hence their usual abode, deep beneath the cooling waves of the sea or dark lakes. Their vampiric nature is countered by their fondness for children, whom they go out of their way to protect (unlike the nasty rumors of folklore), though they are not above teaching errant and naughty children a lesson or two. For our wands, we have made a pact with Immortelle herself, from whom we gather strands of her platinum hair, in exchange for an elixir which keeps her beautiful without draining victims. This material bestows fortitude and longevity.
*fire - Ignites - Some say our most powerful allies among the otherkin are the Ignites, yet quite honestly they are also among the most mysterious. They dwell deep in the mountains, where no man is allowed to tread, and only their emissaries meet with us, trading in the rich magical ores and stones which they mine. They are a proud folk, seemingly made of stone themselves, though beneath the surface of rock flesh one can see and feel the magma that comprises their true essence. Their magic is potent, and they are often quite benevolent with respectful travelers, though they are very fond of puns and will attempt to engage those they encounter in a battle of “wit.” It is from their magical ore that we derive their essence, bestowing endurance and wisdom.
*water - Pardalokampos - The “water leopard” dwells in the depths of bays, sounds and fjords, and occasionally beneath the rocks and shadows of the neritic zone. They are well-armed with razor-sharp claws and a ferocious bite that injects a potent neurotoxin inducing an hallucinogenic paralysis. Each year, at the king tide, the Pardalokampoi swim up streams and rivers to spawn before returning to their deep water homes. Their intelligence and usefulness to the Convocation is paramount, providing watchful eyes on our aqueous borders. Their coarse and scaled blue-grey lower hide sheds like a snake, which we collect and grind along with their molted quills, containing the properties of catlike grace and subterfuge.
*water - Ashrays - Ashrays are a race of tiny nocturnal shapeshifters with the torso and head of a human and the hindquarters of a water snake for their native aquatic homes, though they can shed their tail into legs and walk on land if they desire. They are iridescent, almost rainbow-like in hue, though when they molt and shed, their discarded skin is a tough translucent slough. These benevolent creatures are known most for their ability to turn water into prodigious quantities of Single Malt Scotch. They also possess an odd affinity for stylish, brightly-colored clothing when in human form, which they use to attract human beings with whom they mate. Woe befall the careless human who steals their clothes when they are away, however, for those who do are followed home and harassed and harangued for the rest of their days as if they were married unhappily ever after. They do however, loathe the sun, and if caught in it’s baleful rays, they melt into a puddle of rainbow water. It is the shed skin of the Ashray that we use in our wands, bestowing abundance and adaptability.
*water - Sirene- On the farthest rocks of the bitter seas dwell the Sirene, glorious merfolk whose hypnotic song, though often lethal to the enchanted, when interpreted correctly (after decades of preparation, study, and taking the necessary precautions) can gift one with the ability to accurately predict the weather. Caught within a specially prepared sea sponge, we harvest the song of these Sirene. Though still exceedingly dangerous to our customers (we don’t want them wandering off to the next body of water and drowning themselves), the essence of the song bestows prodigious levels of insight and appeal. Sealed jar with valve.
*air - Snawfus - The Snawfus is a creature first identified by lumberjacks in the forests of the Ozark Mountains. The Snawfus resembles a white deer with broad wings. The antlers of the Snawfus are said to be the living branches of a dogwood tree, complete with blossoms and green leaves. With extreme physical prowess, Snawfum are able to leap from the forest floor to the tops of trees, and perch on the slenderest of branches like a pixie. It has been said that the first observation of these elusive creatures leads to delight, a second sighting causes paralyzing terror, and a third sighting results in death. This has never been proven, but remains a tad unnerving. Snawfum are known to be the guardians of the forest, alighting on trees in full sight close to beings bent on destruction. Further, the beasts exhale blue mist from their mouths that drifts upwards towards the sky forming a blue haze while simultaneously mottling their crisp white feathers, rendering them almost invisible amongst the clouds. It is these feathers that we gather and use, bestowing swiftness and diligence.
*air - Hippotheus - These misunderstood creatures, while truly frightening to behold, are in fact quite gentle in nature. Their bodies are horse-like in shape, yet skeletal, possessing eight legs and covered in a soft downy fur, so as to blend in with the snowy climes that they inhabit. Their breath causes hoarfrost to collect, their saliva can freeze almost any substance, and their blood is pure liquid nitrogen. Hippotheoi are often chosen as mounts for gods as they have the ability to move between planes. Perhaps the best know example of this species is Sleipnir, the mount of Woden. In the spring they shed their downy white coat, from which we harvest the fur which grants tenacity and fearlessness bordering on ambivalence.
*air - Aviscauda - No one is certain what the Aviscauda actually looks like, but it is thought to be akin to a largish, jet-black bird that can shift the shape of its tail to mimic the tails of other forest-dwelling creatures. They use this ability to act as a decoy in the path of hunters pursuing other forest creatures. Regardless of whether or not it is struck by the hunter’s weapons, its tail drops off as a trophy or at the very least to make the hunter believe their prey escaped. The Aviscauda will always return to retrieve its tail in the dead of night. If the hunter has taken the tail, the Aviscauda will not hesitate to pursue and retrieve it. A smart hunter, when hearing the creature’s call, “Aviscauda! Aviscauda!” will turn tail and run, abandoning the Aviscauda’s tail in his flight. Nothing is known of the fate of those who do not. Aviscauda also delight in taunting and stealing away those who commit the most heinous of crimes in their eyes, such as murdering a member of your own family, hitting a bird with a rock, or almost any other form of animal abuse. The feathers of the Aviscauda, which we collect from their nests (oddly enough very easy to find in the crannies of hollow trees and old barns), bestow the qualities of righteousness with a keen sense of humor and a talent for duplicity.
*earth - Sasquatch - Unlike the the 10’ tall, highly aggressive, armored Stonemen in the Northeast of this land, or the the very elusive and more petite 7’ tall Momo clan on the bluffs of the Mississippi River, the towering Sasquatch is something to beheld with some individuals reaching upwards of 16 1/2’. When born, they average 54”! Truly the Giants of this new world.
Sasquatches prefer to live in tribal units of 3-5 families, with each family consisting of exactly 4 members. They are gatherers by profession, very calm and decisive, with a reverence for life that is humbling to the wizards that deal with them. They are generally on-the-move, able to travel great distances in a short period of time, and so would you, with a stride of almost 7’! They rigidly avoid contact with the mundane world, and use a salve that we provide them to cause such a stink about their person as to drive away the curious, but only the fallow can smell it. In return, they provide us with strands of their hair which possess the properties of spontaneity and determination.
*earth - Demeter’s Boon - aka Aeternum Virent - This peculiar and ancient plant has one truly remarkable characteristic: the plant is reborn from the mould of its own decline. From a lifeless ball of leaf litter and a chance encounter with water in any quantity, Demeter’s Boon rapidly explodes into a vernal, vivified, and verdant variation of its own former self! In the leaves of the regenerated plant lie the keys to life’s persistence. Studies on the plant have led to decoctions that almost rivals the potency of the philosopher’s stone. It is their desiccated remains that we use in our wands, infusing the properties of healing and nurturing.
*earth - Cascadian Pixies - aka the Hummingbird People - Colorful and majestic, they rule the glens of the forests with an air of poise and an aura of magic that glistens off of them as much as their shining carapaces. They are a short-lived race, given the nature of otherkin, only spanning a couple-hundred years or so, and so they are much more impetuous and flighty than the rest. It is not unheard of for the Hummingbird People to elect a new queen or king three or four times in a decade, thus beginning a new cycle of establishing alliances and agreements. Still, they are one of the most helpful of the races, constantly using their powers to aid travelers and bring good luck to wanderers. They shed their wings habitually, which is useful for us, as the wings grant the essence of good fortune and benevolence.
